When it comes to horror movies, 2023 wasn’t the best year in recent memory – but it did produce the 10 amazing horror movies.

10. Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead is a reunion between two estranged sisters that gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons. Fighting a primal battle for survival, they face the most nightmarish version of family.
Evil Dead Rise was pretty much everything I wanted from a new Evil Dead movie, 97 minutes of dreadful action with gory creative kills.
Evil Dead Rise even adds a cool new wrinkle to the abilities that I hope future sequels will expand on this was a great entry to one of my favorite franchises of all time.
9. No One Will Save You

An exiled, anxiety-ridden girl must battle an alien who’s found its way into her home. The blend of extraterrestrial terror and home invasion horror works and this movie felt super fresh and original.
There’s almost no dialogue in the entire film but instead of feeling gimmicky, it makes you feel as isolated as the main character Brenn who’s been ostracized by the people in town throughout the movie.
It feels like she’s all alone up against this otherworldly threat and most of the film is carried by her powerful silent performance.
9. Totally Killer

After murdering three teens, an infamous killer makes a shocking return after 35 years on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim.
When 17-year-old Jaimi comes face to face with the masked maniac, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987.
Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture, Jaimie teams up with her teenage mother to take down the psychopath.
Totally Killer is a super fun mashup of Back to the Future and 80s slasher.
7. Scream VI

Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave their place for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.
The set pieces in this film are awesome, with the subway sequence being particularly nerve-wracking and a scene that sees the characters traversing an alleyway dozens of feet below with the shaky ladder is the ultimate nailbiter.
Scream 6 is one of the better films in the Scream franchise and represents a return to form for a franchise that people adore.
6. Birth/Rebirth

A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl but she must harvest biological necessities from pregnant women to keep the child breathing.
When the girl’s mother, a nurse, discovers her baby is alive, the two enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path.
It goes to places that most movies are just not willing to go and it left people with their jaws hanging open several times during its runtime.
5. Influencer

Social media influencer Madison is struggling on a solo backpacking trip in Thailand when she meets a girl who travels with ease and shows Madison a more uninhibited way of living.
However, the girl’s interest in Madison takes a darker turn as she is not who she seems. This is a tense unpredictable thriller with twists and turns right up until the Final Act.
Every time you think you have a sense of where the film is going, it changes directions and puts you right back on the edge of your seat.
4. Infinity Pool

Guided by a seductive and mysterious woman, a couple on vacation ventures outside the resort grounds and finds themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror.
A tragic accident soon leaves them facing a zero-tolerance policy for crime where either you’ll be executed, or if you’re rich enough to afford a clone, you can watch yourself die.
The performances of Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth make it one of the best horror films of the year.
3. Thanksgiving

After a Black Friday Riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Directed by Eli Roth, the gore and the kills are just fantastic as Roth took a lot of time energy and thought into each one of these kills to just make them as gruesome and uncomfortable.
There’s a fun mystery quality to it as well, and a real “who did it” kind of mystery that makes the movie so much fun.
A sleeper success, there’s a sequel in development for this slasher hit movie.
2. Talk To Me
When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits with an embalmed hand, they become hooked on this new thrill and high-stakes party game until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
When you’ve got a bunch of teenagers holding the embalmed hand of a Satanist from party to party, what could possibly go wrong?
With a fresh premise, this film is an unpredictable genuinely terrifying ride. The tattooed embalmed hand is an original creepyprop and the movie is incredibly shaped.
The Possession sequences in particular are spooky and iconic with characters convulsing and eyes turning solid black as they make contact with the other side.
What they see on the other side is even more terrifying, as the apparitions all have this rotting oozing look which is effective and super scary. If you haven’t seen this one yet what are you waiting for?
1. When Evil Lurks
In a remote Village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos.
The movie just sprints from one horrifying scene to the next and while you still be processing some shocking visual from 10 minutes earlier, the movie throws something even more disturbing at you.
A unique premise strong characters, thrilling action, and nerve-shredding scares make When Evil Lurks my favorite horror film and one of the best horror movies of 2023.
This film isn’t for everyone but if you like your horror darker than the inside of a black hole then you have to check it out.
