The End Of The Conjuring Series?

Warner Bros

There are a lot of questions regarding the upcoming installment, starting from the director for The Conjuring: Last Rites, which hasn’t announced yet.

However, there is speculation that James Wan may return to helm the sequel as it might be the final chapter of our beloved series.

In a recent interview with Collider about his robot horror feature M3GAN, Wan shared his thoughts about the future of The Conjuring series.

He said that the team is not rushing yet and taking their time with The Conjuring 4 to ensure they tell “the right story” that would pay a fitting tribute to the Warrens’ tales and potentially wrap up the series.

“Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.”

The Journey

The Conjuring 2013 (Warner Bros)

The epic journey of The Conjuring franchise began in 2013 with the release of the trademark title film The Conjuring, directed by James Wan.

The movie was based on the real-life paranormal reports of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who worked on various demented cases.

The Conjuring (2013) introduced us to the Warrens and their thrilling involvement with the haunting in Rhode Island of the Perron family in 1971.

The Conjuring received critical acclaim and its success led to the creation of the popular horror movie franchise known as The Conjuring Universe, including various other spin-offs and sequels.

The series was followed by a sequel called The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case (2016) and the 2021 released sequel, The Devil Made Me Do It.

Release Date

Warner Bros

The release date is unknown as for the important details of The Conjuring 4: Last Rites, Warner Bros. has yet to make an official announcement.

However, we can speculate that it might get a surprise release the next year based on the three-year gap formula, work in between each movie in the franchise.

So, the fans can expect the premiere to take place in the summer of 2024. Let’s hope for the best.

Premise

As for the new Conjuring movie storyline, it’s still under wraps. The makers are still pondering over the paranormal case which would be the premise of the movie.

With The Devil Made Me Do It ending in 1981, it’s reckon that The Conjuring 4: The Last Rites story movie would take place sometime during the 1980s.

The Warrens had plenty of paranormal cases during that period that could serve as the basis for the next film’s story.

One case that could feature in the movie is the terrifying case of the Smurl haunting, which the Warrens investigated in 1986.

Only one thing is sure Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will return as Ed and Lorraine Warren in the impending sequel.

Either way, the fact that a new The Conjuring TV series is in the works suggests that The Conjuring story could end on an ambiguous note.

Upcoming Projects

The Nun 2 (Warner Bros)

Though The Conjuring series might be coming to an end it certainly doesn’t seem like the franchise is looking to slow down any time soon.

Warner Bros. recently set forth a new The Conjuring TV Series and the prequel movie The Nun 2, which is ready to hit theaters in September.

Not much has been revealed yet about the new series, but Wan is attached as a producer alongside DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.

The long-awaited movie The Crooked Man has now been canceled, as have plans to craft a new Conjuring spin-off around the demons introduced in The Devil Made Me Do It.

While The Nun 2 is still in queue for a September 2023 release, James Wan has hinted that The Conjuring 4 may be the end of the franchise.

While there’s nothing confirmed yet, it could be that The Conjuring 4: Last Rites is the final chapter in James Wan’s epic horror saga.
