C’mon, Talk to Me, it’s not a common thing to hear about a horror movie made in Australia, made by Australians and with an Australian cast, would be termed as the best horror movie of 2023.
It’s funny, that the movie had negligible hype from the beginning and most of us didn’t even hear its name until the release.
But after the incredible reviews and positive word of mouth, I couldn’t help myself to go and see it, and well, I wasn’t disappointed.
In fact, this is the most brilliant horror movie I have seen this year. If you’re a fan of Drag Me to Hell kinda movies, you’re definitely going to love this gritty and gruesome Australian gem, Talk to Me.
Premise
Talk To Me revolves around a group of GEN Z friends who stumble upon a sinister discovery, a peculiar method to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand.
What starts as a thrill-seeking escapade, quickly turns into a horrifying situation when one of the friends goes too far with the ritual, unleashing dark and demonic forces upon themselves.
What’s Good?
The Directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, known by their YouTube channel “RackaRacka” have truly made a fantastic horror movie. They were able to pull off a great low-budget horror film that deserves our attention.
The cinematography and direction were all incredible with some expertly crafted scenes. The unsettling soundtrack seemingly crawls up your spine as the tension is soaring.
Talk to Me doesn’t rely on jump scares! In simple words, it doesn’t just give you surface scares but gets inside your head and really makes you think.
The special effects were done pretty well as the scenes with the hand appeared legitimately scary and tense.
The cast did a commendable job as the acting looked pretty genuine as they delivered every emotion in detail, internally and externally.
With its tight narrative and good pace, Talk To Me keeps us both engaged and terrified throughout its entire 94 minutes. Probably Talk to Me is the best horror movie of 2023, the possession has never been so much fun!
What’s Bad?
The story isn’t unique as it’s just another ‘other side’ supernatural horror flick. But it does have some originality to it despite being a ritual or seance-based plot.
Talk to Me isn’t particularly scary, as it relies more on body horror and disturbing visuals, but it is very unnerving and tense nonetheless.
The movie is rated R because of its strong and bloody violent content, so it’s not for everyone. And be warned! It contains some brutal, head-smashing scenes that will churn your stomach from the inside.
Final Verdict
I can easily say that Talk To Me is the best horror film of 2023 and the best horror film I have seen in a while. Talk To Me executes the exact horror which has been long missing in the horror genre.
Horror as in a deep, engaging, horrifying story and realism that pushes its limits so far that you can’t help but be completely jaw-dropped and uncomfortable.
The movie also teaches you to just never, ever play with dark mediums of any sort. Whether people think that stuff is real or not, it’s extremely dangerous.
Talk to Me has some elements of The Sixth Sense, Get Out, and Hereditary. But trust me, the movie goes beyond the limits of horror than the movies that I have mentioned above.
The incredible writing. The horrific imagery is pretty eerie. The scenes that leave you feeling so many different emotions.
Overall, for me, Talk To Me is the most exciting and the best horror movie of 2023. So, go watch it.
